To diagnose ADHD, medical experts begin by ruling out other medical or psychiatric causes of the patient’s symptoms.

To diagnose ADHD, medical experts begin by ruling out other medical or psychiatric causes of the patient’s symptoms. Psychological testing can be useful to rule out learning disabilities. It is not uncommon for a diagnosis of ADHD to coexist with anxiety, depression, Tourette’s, bipolar disorder, conduct and learning disabilities.

  • Typically, ADHD patients begin showing symptoms at about the age they start school.
  • Though less frequent, some very impulsive children are diagnosed at 2 or 3 years old.
  • Still another group appears to develop more severe symptoms around the fourth grade. These children may have had ADHD before but compensated for the condition.
  • Some children may remain undiagnosed until they are in their teens.
  • Recently, more adults are being diagnosed with ADHD. These individuals most likely had the disorder as children but were not properly diagnosed at that time.

There is no definitive test that diagnoses ADHD. Instead, it is a careful analysis of the child’s symptoms up to early childhood, including corroborating evidence from family members, previous report cards, etc. along with a neuropsychiatric evaluation. This often includes a battery of tests to assess overall intelligence and general knowledge, self-reported ADHD symptoms, ADHD symptoms reported by others, and tests to screen for accompanying conditions.

For the child’s benefit, screening tests try to rule out other conditions such as depression, anxiety, or substance abuse. Organic diseases such as hyperthyroidism may also present with symptoms similar to those of ADHD, and it is imperative to rule these out as well.

Most people do not realize that every normal individual exhibits ADHD-like symptoms occasionally (for example, when tired or stressed). But for ADHD diagnosis, the symptoms should have been present from childhood and consistently interfere with normal everyday activities multiple aspect’s of the individual’s life: work, school, and interpersonal relationships.
